Hello Families,

Here are a few of the exciting  things we did this week:

- began our learning about the significance of Remembrance Day.  Students conducted research on WWI, WWII and the War in Afghanistan.  They also wrote a short reflective piece on why we should honour our veterans.  We also began creating our art for the display case to accompany our Remembrance Day Assembly.  Please see note below about assembly details.

- went on a couple of walking field trips to explore and observe our neighbourhood.  Students practiced some sketching activities and shared things that they value about their community.  These trips are also great practice for City Hall School, as well will be spending much of our time sketching, exploring, and asking questions about the environment around us.

- City Hall School is next week!  The students and I are very excited to be taking our learning downtown.  We are going to meet so many engaging people and see/ a lot of new sights and sounds.  To help prepare you child for a successful week please ensure that they:

    ·       Bring a backpack with a large lunch, several snacks and a water bottle.  Please ensure your child
has enough food to sustain them throughout the whole day.  Please do not send any food items
that need to be heated, as there will not be an opportunity to do so.

·       Wear clothing suitable for October/November weather.  A jacket, layers of clothing, light gloves, and a warm hat are a good idea.  As the group will be walking, both indoors and outdoors, for the majority of the day, appropriate footwear (warm and comfortable) are necessary for walking through urban environment, using stairs and crowded concourses.

    ·       Wear a Halloween costume that is “low-key”.  As our first day at City Hall School falls on
Halloween, students are able to wear Halloween attire that is subtle if they so choose.  Please no
masks, face paint, or props.  Students will need to ensure that if they choose to wear Halloween
attire that they will be comfortable walking, sitting and can wear weather appropriate clothing
        overtop while outside.

Looking forward to an awesome week!

Hello Families,

Some of the exciting things we did this week were:

- exploring increasing and decreasing patterns related to multiplication and division using input and output tables.  Student also collaborated while working on the problem of the week; a weekly multi-step word problem that targets various math concepts.

- inviting our buddies to join us in the gym to play some collaborative games, line tag and wax museum and get their bodies moving. They had an amazing time and were able to act as excellent leaders.

- created visual journal covers using leaves that they gathered and pressed.  All so unique and beautiful!

- practicing the song that they will be preforming at the Remembrance Day assembly in Music.  The assembly will be held in the morning on November 10th.  Time TBD.

- continued our inquiry into evidence and investigation, specifically finger prints.  Student conducted research to learn about fingerprint facts and types, characteristics and how investigators must match type and 8-10 characteristics to have a positive match.  They even analyzed their own prints, recorded the amounts so loop, whorls and arches and then we combined all of the individual data into a larger set, so that each student could create a bar graph representing the data.

- listened to more of our class read aloud, "Gregor the Overlander".  Following the end of each three chapter sections students have been engaging in vocabulary work, summarizing events, making predictions and inferring based on evidence, and making text-to-self connections.

Hello Families!

Some of the exciting things that we did this week were:

- Exploring why we need government.  Students participated in discussions and tasks about the purpose of governments and began to digging in the different services that municipal governments provide to their citizens. We also engaged in talks about who is a citizen and how can someone become a citizen.

- Engaging in learning related to decreasing patterns using pictures, numbers, letters, graphs and tables.

- Began our learning related to the topic of Evidence and Investigation.  This area of study is exciting for students because they get to explore topics, such as fingerprints, DNA evidence, footprints, animal tracks and handwriting analysis through the lens of law enforcement agencies.  Through their learning they will practice the following deductive reasoning skills: questioning, predicting, categorizing, inferring, and making connections, which transfer over to many other areas of learning.

- Discussing Tea Service in our classroom. Starting Monday, students have been asked to bring in a small mug if they are interested in partaking in making and drinking tea. By participating, students will have a chance to display grace and courtesy while taking turns preparing and serving their peers during the morning Montessori work period. They will practice serving etiquette, doing something kind for others and contribute to continuing to create healthy relationships within our classroom community.

- Brainstorming and reflecting on the many reasons that we are thankful in the multiple realms of our lives.  Students made visual journal pages sharing their thoughts and it was amazing to see the diverse reflections that students had and their ability to think beyond their home life.
