Hello Families,

Some of the interesting things that we did this week were:

- learning about the Cartesian plane.  Students took their pervious knowledge about graphing ordered pairs in one quadrant and expanded their learning by graphing various combinations of positive and negative ordered pairs in all four quadrants to create a mystery design.  Many students love this type of graphing so much that they asked to bring one home over spring break.  Some ate bringing home one that was assigned today to complete.

- completed learning about limericks and created their own.  Students discovered that limericks were created in England many years ago, have been adopted by the Irish and are very popular around St. Patrick's Day.  They are meant to be nonsense verses and often cause laughter, because they are so silly.  Students read through some examples, identified the pattern and rhyming rule and the began creating and sharing their own.  After each student created at least four original limericks, they selected their favourite and created a visual journal page to capture it.

- conducting research on a constellation of their choice and creating some beautiful art to accompany it. Students learned about how constellations are a group of stars that create a pattern in the night sky.  They also found out that the constellations that we see in the Northern Hemisphere are different than those in the see in the Southern, and that only a few cross over the equator and are seen in both depending on the time of year and tilt of the Earth.  Students also explored how constellations received their names and the stories that go with them and much more!  We will continue our learning about their exploration after spring break.  The art was created by marbling paper using milk and food colouring to create the circle.  The students then created a cut out of their constellation image/being and placed gems onto to represent how it stars are positioned in the sky.

- spent time with our buddies playing math and literacy games!  The relationships that have been created and mentorship opportunities have been absolutely amazing to see.

- students completed another "I see...I think...I wonder" routine while visiting the aquarium in the learning commons.  The fish have grown so much and we can really see some features that will help us identify what type of fish they are.    When we get back from spring break the type of the fish will be revealed and our next steps as a school, in terms of care, will be set in motion.  Stay tuned!

- creating weather graphs for the regions that students have been researching about.  Students will create a line graph that tracks the weather of three locations in their region over the course of five days.  Depending on when they began their graph, students will need to check the weather for 2 - 3 days over spring break, in order to complete their assignment.

UPDATES:

We will begin gymnastics in our regularly scheduled gym classes on Monday, April 3rd.  The gymnastics unit will last two weeks.  Safety routines, cooperation and sportsmanship are taught and reviewed in each class.

This physical activity opportunity will help students acquire individual skills through a variety of developmentally appropriate movement activities.

It is important for students to come to school prepared to be actively engaged. The following guidelines are very helpful…

HEAD TO TOE - READY TO GO!!!

Head ....................... long hair pulled back

Ears/Throat/Wrist ............... jewellery off

Shirt.................................. one layer shirt

Waist ................................................tucked in

Pants.........................sporty pants or shorts, no belts or zippers

Ankles..........................pants rolled up if ankles are covered

Hell Families!

Some of the exciting things that we did this week were:

- celebrating Pi Day by taking part in a CBE wide read a loud focusing on how math is for everyone and brainstorming a list of how math is everywhere in our world.

- beginning to gather information about the people that exist in their region of Canada.  Students are quickly learning about how diverse the regions are with cultures, traditions, and history of the various groups.

- continuing to explore the water cycle by collaborating to perform a reader's theatre play about the stages of the water cycle and then create a both eye catching and detailed visual journal page demonstrating their understanding of the cycle.

- continuing to work on their biography writing based on Autumn Peltier.  Students finished up their rough drafts and were able to meet with a peer to give and receive feedback, based on success criteria.  We spoke about how feedback should be directly related to supporting their peer improve their work and be directly based on the success criteria.  We also discussed that feedback is not meant to be criticism and not to take suggestions too personally.  Students then used the feedback that they were given and applied it to their writing.

- exploring what criteria is needed for a planet to be considered a dwarf planet, as well as conducting research on a planet of their choice and creating a Google Slides presentation to share with their peers.  Students then created a page in their visual journal that contained a Venn diagram, which compared their planet and Earth.

- celebrating St. Patrick's Day by exploring the Bitmoji Classroom.  Students toured the room looking for hidden links, which led them to a variety of lessons and activities related to the day; how rainbows formed, how to say Happy St' Patrick's Day in Irish, two math tasks (ordered pairs and order of operations) that revealed a Irish joke/saying, the history of St. Patrick's Day, the story of the Blarney Stone, why shamrocks area a symbol of luck, and a writing activity about limericks.

UPDATES:

- Students are coming home with a coordinate graphing assignment for homework today.  It is due back to class on Monday.

Hello Families,

A few of the exciting things that we did this week were:

- finishing off our work with the order of operations and began our exploration of integers.  Students worked to related integers to concepts in the real world, such as above and below sea level, thermometers and spending money.

- continuing to explore the regions of Canada by looking deeply into the land; what it provides for us and how we live on it.  Students have focused in on resources and industries, where people have settled and why, as well as how the natural landscape makes each region distinct.

- beginning to learn about biography writing.  In sticking with our class year long inquiry big idea, "Old Enough to Make Change", students are looking into Autumn Peltier, an 18 year old water activist, who is fighting to have clean water provided to all Indigenous communities in Canada.  Students have done work around how to conduct sound research by exploring the the various steps, (finding credible resources, taking notes, paraphrasing, giving credit and plagiarism), before starting and have done a great job finding credible resources, making informative jot notes and beginning they first draft.  Next week they will edit and revise their work and then meet with peers to share and receive feedback.  Ask you child about Autumn and all of the amazing things that they have learned so far!

- helping put together some documentation boards about their Canadian region, biography and Artist in Residence learning to showcase all of their hard work to families for conferences.  They should be very proud of themselves!

- created some collaborative peer art using acrylic on canvas inspired by the Mother Teresa quote, "I can do things you cannot and you can do things I cannot; together we can do great things."  Students made strong connections around how we are all unique, have strengths and areas of growth and that we can learn a great deal from each other.  They also touched on how by working together, supporting each other in times of need and respecting each other for who we are, that they can achieve and create wonderful things.  To create this art, each person chose a colour to represent them and then they take tuns placing dots, lines or another design on the canvas until they are satisfied with the design.  Next, a squeegee is pulled over the paint from top to bottom, dragging the paint together, which resulted in beautiful blended pieces.
