Hello Families,

This week we spent a great deal of time focusing on the various complexities related to bullying.  Here are a few of the things that we did:

- Students took part in a Telus webinar that focused on what to do if you are being bullied or see/hear of bullying happening online through social media, gaming and texting.  Emphasis was placed on being safe and effective in how you are to go about addressing it with the individual doing the bullying and also to talk to a trusted adult for support.  Resources such as Kids Help Phone were provided and students were encouraged to do their best to be a positive person while online.

- On Wednesday,  Grades 3-6 attended the Calgary Hitmen Telus Be Brave Game, where 10,000 plus students and teachers gathered together under one roof, to spread the message of acceptance, learn about bullying prevention, and how everyone can “be someone’s hero.”  They had the chance to listen to two athletes tell they stories about overcoming mental health issues, bullying and how they spread awareness of being kind.

- Students continued their learning around bullying by watching aa video that discussed what bullying is.  They learned that bullying is about having power over someone else and is actions that are repeated regularily to the same person or people.  Students also learned about the different types of bulling; physical, verbal, social/relational and cyberbullying in depth.  The video also covered the people who are involved in bullying situations, the bully, the bullied and the bystander, and why people in these situations do what they do/do not do, as well as how they can address bullying.  Following the video, students were asked to participate in a discussion, in which they put themselves in the shoes of the bully, the bullied and the bystander and were to think about emotions and thought processes of each.  They then used the templates pictured below to create a written piece reflecting one or all of the possible roles in a bullying situation.  Their writing was both thoughtful and powerful.  They also designed their own unique pink shirt day t-shirt.  They are very excited to share their work with you at student-led conferences.

 Hello Families,

- A few of the exciting things that we did this week were:

- working with increasingly difficult order of operation questions by engaging in problems that included exponents and multiple sets of brackets.  They also learned that multiplication can be symbolized by "x"as well as "."

- exploring the reason for the seasons.  Students engaged in group brainstorming around how/why they believe the seasons occur.  Following some research and sharing, students learned that seasons take place due to the tilt of the earth while orbiting the sun.  They dug deeper and realized that the tilt and rotation affect the amount of direct sunlight that an area of the earth receives during certain times of the year, which causes the seasons.  They also investigated how the northern and southern hemisphere are on opposite seasons, even if they are on the same side of the globe, because of the tilt affecting the amount of direct or indirect sunlight that it receives.

- spending time with their buddies making friendship bracelets/keychains and playing some games.  The bracelets/keychains were an excellent fine motor task and allowed for students to spend time creating something together.

- exploring the roots of democracy in Ancient Athens, by beginning to look into how present day democracy is similar and different.  So far we have discovered that they had a direct democracy model and we have a representative democracy model, as well as that only men who were citizens could vote, where as both men and women citizens can vote in Canada today.

- having the opportunity to show off their leadership skills by helping a grade 1 class practice their home reading books and others helped out in the kindergarten room.

- beginning to create landscape paintings of the Canadian regions that they have been researching.  Students gathered information about the physical features that make their region unique and created an original piece based on their findings.  They are turning out beautifully!

 Hello Families,

A few of the exciting things that we did this week were:

- making our weekly trip to the learning commons to observe the aquarium that's been there over the past month.  The students first looked into the tank and made observations and predictions on what they thought were in there.  Students used the journalling techniques that we learned at City Hall School called, " I See, I Think, I Wonder" to record their findings.  Over the course of the month they have watched the living things in the tank change drastically and soon they will find out what they are!  Having this opportunity allows students to practice their skills related to critical thinking, predicting, posing thick questions and organizing ideas.  Below are some pictures of what they have looked like during our visits so far.

- beginning our leaning around the order of operations, which the students are very excited about.  Some commented that they like having the steps to follow to solve complicated problems and some others think that it is like solving a puzzle.

- engaging in some low-stakes writing prompts to help students expand on the types of topics that they write about, as well as connecting their work to their personal experiences.  This week's prompts were, "Make a Change Monday: What can you do to make the world more awesome?" and "What's Good Wednesday?!: Tell me something good about your week so far!" Following their writing they have time to self-edit, share with their peers, and apply peer feedback.

- spending time with our 1/2 buddies playing math and literacy games.
