 Hello Families,

- A few of the exciting things that we did this week were:

- working with increasingly difficult order of operation questions by engaging in problems that included exponents and multiple sets of brackets.  They also learned that multiplication can be symbolized by "x"as well as "."

- exploring the reason for the seasons.  Students engaged in group brainstorming around how/why they believe the seasons occur.  Following some research and sharing, students learned that seasons take place due to the tilt of the earth while orbiting the sun.  They dug deeper and realized that the tilt and rotation affect the amount of direct sunlight that an area of the earth receives during certain times of the year, which causes the seasons.  They also investigated how the northern and southern hemisphere are on opposite seasons, even if they are on the same side of the globe, because of the tilt affecting the amount of direct or indirect sunlight that it receives.

- spending time with their buddies making friendship bracelets/keychains and playing some games.  The bracelets/keychains were an excellent fine motor task and allowed for students to spend time creating something together.

- exploring the roots of democracy in Ancient Athens, by beginning to look into how present day democracy is similar and different.  So far we have discovered that they had a direct democracy model and we have a representative democracy model, as well as that only men who were citizens could vote, where as both men and women citizens can vote in Canada today.

- having the opportunity to show off their leadership skills by helping a grade 1 class practice their home reading books and others helped out in the kindergarten room.

- beginning to create landscape paintings of the Canadian regions that they have been researching.  Students gathered information about the physical features that make their region unique and created an original piece based on their findings.  They are turning out beautifully!
