Hello Families!
What...a...week! City Hall School was filled with curious big questions, special first time experiences, unique opportunities, many memories made, as well as large amounts of real-world curricular connections. The students all agreed that having this experience was well worth it and that they learned a lot.
Here is a quick summary of some of the things that we did this week:
- used two forms of Calgary City Transit (city bus and c-train)
- visited the Every Child Matters memorial
- accessed the +15 system to get to the Devonian Gardens, where we ate lunch, sketched koi, and made observations about how a living wall works
- had a meeting with Councillor Demong who answered our questions about getting involved in our community, what his job entails and the positives and negative to being in politics
- explored Stephen Avenue historical buildings and sketched the famous Galleria Trees
- met with the Calgary Arts Development to discuss the importance, meaning and value to public art, as well as how artists get selected
- spent time exploring Olympic Plaza and visiting the Famous Five statues
- attended a city council meeting, where we listened to council discuss electric scooter policies, watched them present a few awards to people who have made positive impact on the city, and talked about taking accountability for your own actions as a member of council
- toured around the East Village to look at and discuss urban living, planning, and design, as well as how to preserve and activate historical spaces.
- sketched and discussed the historical importance of the confluence to Calgary's past
- met with a representative from the transportation department and learned a lot about how to make all of the ways that Calgarians get around the city safe and accessible
- observed, sketched and asked questions about a Day of the Dead display in the City Hall Building
- met with Mayor Gondek to ask questions about how kids can make a positive change in the world, what she does when she is under pressure or frustrated, what a typical day looks like for her and a few question about the new event centre. On Halloween, we also got to go trick or treating at her office
- viewing some Cassie Suche murals along the Bow River that were made of fingerprints provided my local citizens. Students were able to discuss and interpret the meaning of her art, as well as connect it to their learning about finger prints by identifying types and characteristics
- viewing various types of art in the Arts Commons, such as soundscapes, pottery, and an indigenous exhibit that contained various types of art
- visited the Central Library to see what the site has to offer everyone, as well as use its large windows to get an excellent view of the tallest buildings in Calgary. Students sketched, posed questions and made observations related to architecture
