Hello Families,

Some of the exciting things that we did this week were:

- learning about adding and subtracting fractions with common denominators.  We then moved onto learning about mixed numbers and improper fractions and their relationship.  Many students were able to make real world connections to where they would find mixed fractions in real life, such as baking.

- having a very unique experience of having the HAWKS Police helicoptor come and land in our school field.  The staff and students loved it and learned a lot about how helicopters fly and also how to police force uses them to support Calgary.

- continuing to exploration Alberta wetlands by researching plant and animal adaptations and conditions needed for survival, as well as the life cycles of both plants and animals.

- welcoming a rugby instructor to teach us about ruby!  Students learned the basics of the game, (ie. how to hold, catch and pass the ball, as well as scoring, running plays, terminology, and sportsmenship), through games and drills.  The students had a blast!

- continued our learning about local trees and forests by researching plants and animals and their relationship with trees, the connection between the sun, plants and photosynthesis, as well as the parts of a tree and classifying leaf shapes and parts.  Students also learned that you can tell aa great deal fro a cross section of a tree trunk, with regards to age and the history of growing conditions.

- creating some beautiful spring themed art to help decorate the gym for the Volunteer Tea.  We hope that all that joined us to celebrate today felt our gratitude.  For those who were not able to attend today, we hope that you know that we love and appreciate our volunteers and all that they do.  Without you generously giving your time to support teachers and students, many of the opportunities that we have had this year would not have been possible.  You're the greatest!

 Hello Families,

A few of the exciting things that we did this week were:

- learning about the relationship between decimals and fractions.

- engaging in a version of the animal game to help further our understanding of food chains.  Ask your child about the game and what level of the food chain they were!

- attending the sharing assembly put on by Rooms 11 & 13.  The focused on the importance of getting outside and learning from nature, as well as how the outdoors can be a great way to support positive mental health.

- conducting research on the Haudenosaunee/Iroquois Confederacy, specifically in terms of their form of democracy. Many students pointed out that it is different than the other societies that we have looked at, as a group of women choose the leaders within the clans.

- continuing our learning around Alberta wetland habitats and the various trees and forests.  Students explores the concepts of ecosystems, the nutrient cycle, life cycles of plants and animals, food chains/web, as well as characteristics of leaves and trees.

Below are a few pictures of outdoor school for you to check out!  The students really did have a great time filled with wonderful new experiences, from food, activities, people and learning.

UPDATES:

- Rugby starts on Monday!  If you have not already sent in your child's form, please do on Monday, so that they can participate.

- HAWCS Visit

We are very excited for an opportunity that has been provided to us by Mr. Conlin, Chief Engineer for the Calgary Police Service, Air Support Unit. On the morning of  Monday, June 5 one of the HAWCS helicopters will be visiting our school and doing a 45 minute presentation in our field. This is a unique opportunity for all students, in particular grade 6, who study air and aerodynamics as part of their science curriculum. The helicopter will land in the school field as classes watch with their teachers, from a safe distance. Once the helicopter has landed and shut down, the students will be brought over to sit in a large semi-circle beside the helicopter with their teachers.  The Pilot, Flight Officer, and Mr. Conlin, will do a brief presentation on the team and what they do.  Grade 6 students will then ask a series of prepared questions, about the aircraft, the operation, or aviation in general.  Once the questions are answered, the younger grades will return back to their learning with their teacher.  Grade 5-6 students will then have a brief, closer look at the aircraft.  The Grade 5-6 students will then have the opportunity to watch the helicopter start up and depart from a safe location.

If you have any questions, please contact your child’s teacher for more information.

 Hello Families,

Some of the exciting things that we did this week were:

-  engaged in working with multiplying and dividing decimals.  Students did a great job learning and practicing their skills, both in word problem and numerical form.

- having our first netball session!  Students absolutely loved taking part in this opportunity.  They learned basic rules and the positions on the court.  Next week we have two more sessions that will help build on the previous week's skills and have a fun time too! Students have taken it upon themselves to show leadership and write proposal to purchase some netball equipment for our school.  Stay tuned for updates!

- researching extreme weather!  Students selected a type of extreme weather that interested them (tornado, hurricane, blizzard or flood) and investigated how their chosen event develops/occurs, how it affects humans and animals, how to keep yourself safe during an event, as well as looked in to some historical information about the worst event in Canadian history.

- continuing students' learning about puberty changes and both the male and female reproductive systems. Students have been doing a great job asking questions and engaging in the learning.

Hello Families!

Some of the exciting things that we did this week were:

- we had a practice fire drill.  Students did a great job calmly exiting the building quickly and remaining quiet outside.

- completing our learning with ratios.  Students worked to both simplify and find equivalent ratios.  Next week we will begin our exploration of decimals!

- took part in another art session with Ms. Sharon!  Students learned about different gradients of pencils and the techniques they could use to create various styles of sketches.  They were also introduced to and used two types of art specific erasers.  They used both of these tools to draw realistic meteors for our collaborative meteor shower art piece.  Each student selected and cut out their favourite meteor and then placed it on the night sky portion of the paper.  Stay tuned for a look at the final product soon!

- participating in some PAT practice (Grade 6 students).  Students looked over some previously used PATs that have been released to the public to practice skills such as, reading slowly and thoroughly, looking for details in pictures and diagrams that will help answer the questions and using the process of elimination to narrow down choices when answering multiple choice questions.  By engaging with these released tests, students build their comfort level with how the test format will be, how the questions will be asked and helps them feel more confident going in to the tests at the end of June.  We will continue to practice over the next few months.

- enthusiastically engaging in their novel study work!  Students seem to be loving their chosen novel and are excited each day to jump into the work.  Students are provided with choice in the task they wish to complete after they have read a section of their book, as seen in the picture below.  They are also completing some other engaging activities, such as designing book covers, drawing the setting, creating a newspaper page describing  major event and comparing and contrasting characters to one another and to themselves.

UPDATES:

- Lake Bonavista School is participating in netball from May 8th until May 16th in our gymnasium. This sport involves foundational movement skills such as jumping, running, throwing, and catching. As described on the Netball Alberta website: www.netballalberta.com

Hello Families,

Some of the fun and exciting things that we did this were:

- beginning our work with ratios.  Students participated in a quick review about the various ways that you can represent a ratio, (ex. 3/1, 3:1 and 3 to 1), practiced writing ratios from pictures, symbols and word problems. Students then moved onto working in the abstract, with ratio boxes and identifying the relationship pattern in order to correctly complete the boxes.

- expanding our learning of coordinate graphing by using it with help with their learning about the phases of the moon!

- Have and art session with Ms. Sharon!  Ms. Sharon is back again to help us create a school wide collaborative art project.  The theme is patterns in nature and each class signed up to create a piece with a different pattern.  Ours is meteor showers!  During our first session we talked about how meteor showers take place and how they are predictable, therefore a pattern.  We then added colour to thin paper that other in the school had already started on by making patterns.  These papers will be torn into little pieces and added to several classes' larger pieces.  Next week our class will add out meteor shower art onto our piece and when complete will be placed in a frame in the hallway with all other classes' work in the foyer to create a beautiful gallery for all who visit our school to enjoy.  Stay tuned for pictures from next week's session to see our piece!

- exploring extreme weather, floods and tornadoes, to understand how they take place and how they affect people.  Students will dig deeper into their research by looking at tsunamis and thunderstorms and when they have finished we will look at how people can prepare for each type of weather and how to stay safe during an event.

- collaborating to present Earth Day Reader's Theatre!  Students broke into three groups to practice sharing information on how they can contribute to keeping the earth clean.  Students learned about reducing, reusing and recycling as well as conservation in a creative way.  Two groups presented today and demonstrated speaking clearly, with fluidity and expression, as well as adding in some creativity with props and character voices.  We all look forward to the third groups' presentation on Monday.

- engaged in some Earth Day planting!  Student filled eco-friendly pots with soli and planted some wildflowers.  We are planning on taking care of them until they are well sprouted and will then look for a great location to transplant them!

UPDATES:

- Lockdown Practice on Tuesday:  The safety of all students and staff of Lake Bonavista School is of paramount importance.  To that end, we continue to practice and establish appropriate safety measures for the various situations that may occur and affect our staff and students.

Fire drills are a long-standing expectation of everyone who congregates in a setting such as a school.  We are required to have a minimum of six fire drills each school year.  Our students and staff treat each drill as though it was the real thing and we are very proud of their ability to complete those drills.  Teachers keep class lists with them during all drills and attendance is always taken.  Parents or other visitors are expected to evacuate the building when the fire alarm is sounded.

Today we practiced a drill known as a “Lockdown” with the support of Calgary Police Service.  This was our second practice of the year and teachers have instructed the students regarding their role.  No one is allowed to enter or leave the building during a lockdown procedure. An outside bell rings continuously to alert that we are in lockdown.  This bell serves as a reminder to stay away from the building and call 911.

As we continue to practice and refine our school safety procedures, other safety precautions we have in place include:

  • Locking all doors
  • Walkie-Talkies
  • Visitors are expected to register at the office
  • Volunteers must complete a  CBE Volunteer clearance including a Police Information Check (ePIC) and wear nametags at all times
  • Substitute Teachers are provided with emergency information

Staff have thoroughly reviewed emergency plans with the children.  We appreciate your support in these very important matters.
